Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi

Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi is an initiative by the government of India that give farmers up to ₹6,000 per year as minimum income support. The initiative was announced by Piyush Goyal during the 2019 Interim Union Budget of India on 1 February 2019.

History

The scheme was first conceived and implemented by the Telangana government as the Raithu Bandhu scheme, where a fixed amount is given directly to eligible farmers. The scheme has received praise from various organizations including the World Bank for its successful implementation [ 6 ] . Many economists suggest that this type of investment support is better than agricultural loan waivers [ 7 ] . With the positive results of the scheme, the Government of India wanted to implement it as a nationwide project [ 8 ] and it was announced by Piyush Goyal during the 2019 Interim Union Budget of India on 1 February 2019. [ 9 [ 10 ]

For 2018-2019, ₹20,000 crore was allocated under the scheme. On 24 February 2019, Narendra Modi launched the scheme by transferring the first installment of ₹2,000 to over one crore farmers in Gorakhpur , Uttar Pradesh . [ 11 [ 12 [ 13 ] As of October 2023, farmers have received 14 installments under the scheme.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has awarded top performing states and districts under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. This is based on criteria such as improvement in data , resolution of farmers’ grievances and timely physical verification exercise.
